Detachable Hydraulic Hinge Alloy Tail Long Spine F806H

F806H
F806H is a detachable concealed cup hinge with an alloy tail member and a long spine plate, made for heavy cabinet, kitchen and wardrobe doors that still have to come off by hand. The clip on joint releases the door at the rear of the arm without tools, so panels travel separately and stay serviceable years after handover. The long spine spreads the screw line over a longer run of cabinet side, which is what a solid timber, laminated or soft board panel needs to keep the hinge in the board. A sealed hydraulic damper inside the arm controls the closing arc. Adjusted through round and slotted plate holes and supplied assembled, ready to fit.

Product Overview

F806H detachable hydraulic cabinet hinge with alloy tail and long spine plate

TheF806H hinge puts three specifications together for one job: a hinge that closes itself under control, a door that can still be taken off by hand, and a fixing that is strong enough for a heavy panel. The arm releases from the plate without tools, the tail member of the hinge is an alloy part rather than a pressed steel one, and the plate carries its screws on a long spine.

Each of those three choices answers a different complaint. Soft close answers noise and impact. The clip on joint answers the fitter who has to hang a tall door alone, and the maintenance crew who has to remove it two years later. The long spine answers the door that has started to pull its plate out of the board.

Closing on this hinge is hydraulic. A sealed damper works inside the arm and takes over near the end of the swing, so the door is slowed before it meets the carcase rather than being allowed to arrive under its own weight. Nothing is added to the door and nothing has to be fitted separately: the hinge arrives as one assembled unit.

The hinge is made for interior furniture in kitchens, wardrobes, vanities, office storage and joinery packages. It is supplied ready to fit, and the photographs here are of the actual hinge rather than a rendering, so the tail, the release end and the plate can be checked against your own drilling drawing before samples are requested.

The Alloy Tail On This Hinge

Most hinges in this price class are made entirely from formed strip steel. On this hinge the tail member is made from an alloy part instead, and that is what the model code records. It changes three things a buyer cares about: how accurately the geometry holds, how the hinge behaves over a long production run, and what the hinge weighs on the door.

A formed steel tail is built up from punched and bent parts, so its final shape depends on springback in the metal and on tooling wear across a batch. An alloy tail member is made to a mould, which means the locating faces and the seat that the arm engages come out of every press cycle at the same dimension. For a hinge that has to accept a clip on arm repeatedly, a dimension that stays put is worth more than a marginally higher raw strength.

The second effect is in use. A clip on hinge is a joint that is deliberately made to be opened and closed again, so the surface that takes the release load wears before anything else on the hinge does. The alloy tail carries that interface, and its consistency across a batch is why this hinge is specified on doors that will be removed more than once in their life rather than on doors that are hung and forgotten.

The third effect is a limitation worth stating plainly. An alloy tail is not a stainless steel hinge. In a wet room, a marine environment or a wash down application the correct answer is a corrosion resistant hinge, and this one should not be substituted for it. For interior furniture in normal conditioned or covered service it is a conventional and proven choice.

Why The Long Spine Plate Matters More On A Detachable Hinge

F806H hinge long spine plate and fixing holes

A long spine plate is a plate whose screw holes are spread further apart along the cabinet side. The door puts its weight into shear at those screws and a bending load into the fixing line, and spreading the screws over a longer run reduces what each one has to carry. On chipboard and MDF that is the difference between a fixing that grips solid board and one that ends up in a torn out hole.

With a detachable hinge this becomes more important rather than less, because the door actually comes off. Every refit puts the arm back onto the same plate in the same position, and a plate that has been allowed to creep in its screw holes will never again locate the door where it was first set. A short spine plate on a tall door is one of the common reasons a hinge line is described as having"gone out of true"after a year of use on a project where the doors were removed more than once.

The cost of the long spine is space on the cabinet side. A longer plate covers a longer strip, and that strip is shared with shelf pin holes, drawer runner screws and the fixing lines of the carcass build. Where the side is crowded the family also supplies a short spine plate, and a single order can carry both because the door side boring is identical.

Taking The Door Off And Putting It Back

This is the operation the hinge is named for. Open the door to around ninety degrees, support the panel, press at the release end of the arm and lift. The door comes away with its hinges still attached to it, and the plate stays fixed to the cabinet exactly where it was set. Refitting is the reverse: offer the front of the arm to the front of the plate and press the rear until the joint seats with a positive stop.

Two details decide whether that joint behaves for years or comes back as a complaint. The first is seating: an arm that has been rested onto the front lip of the plate and not pressed home will feel springy, will let the gap change when the door is pushed, and can release under load. The second is plate condition: a plate whose screws have been run in and out of tired chipboard will hold the arm loosely no matter how good the hinge is. On a project where doors are removed repeatedly, refit into fresh screw positions or into board inserts rather than reusing a worn hole.

Done properly, one person can hang a full height wardrobe door in the time it takes two people and a block of wood to do the same job on a fixed hinge. That is the whole commercial argument for paying more for a clip on hinge, and on site it is usually the installer who makes it, not the buyer.

How The Damper Behaves

The hinge swings freely for most of its travel. The damper engages close to the closed position and controls only the last part of the arc, which is why the door does not feel heavy to open and still arrives quietly.

The behaviour that follows from this surprises buyers who test one sample out of context. A damped hinge fitted to a light door in a cold warehouse can close so gently that it seems not to latch, while the same hinge on a heavy door in a warm room shuts with authority. Damping is a force, and it competes with door weight, friction, magnet catch strength and air pressure inside the carcase.

Three rules keep these hinges working:

  1. No lubricant. The damper is sealed and the clip is a dry fit. Spray or oil carried into the arm changes the closing force and drags dust into the mechanism.
  2. No forcing. A door that has to be pushed through the last few degrees is out of alignment. Correct it at the plate screws, or the damper is being worked against the cabinet rather than against air.
  3. No partial seating. On a clip on hinge a half engaged arm loads the release feature rather than the plate, and the hinge will not close the door correctly until it is fully seated.

A hinge that has lost its damping is replaced as an arm, not repaired. There is no serviceable part inside it and no recharge is offered.

Key Features

  1. Clip on release — the door lifts off the plate by hand at the release end, with no screwdriver and no second pair of hands.
  2. Alloy tail member — the tail of this hinge is an alloy part rather than formed steel, made to a mould so the engaging faces hold their size.
  3. Long spine plate — screws spread along a longer run of cabinet side for heavy, tall or soft board doors.
  4. Hydraulic soft close — sealed damper inside the hinge arm controls the closing arc and stops the door against the carcase.
  5. Concealed mounting — the hinge sits in a bored cup in the door and is invisible when the door is shut.
  6. Adjustable in service — round and slotted holes in the plate take up door alignment after the hinge is fitted.
  7. Plated finish — even appearance across arm, tail and plate for interior furniture use.
  8. Shared boring — the door side of this hinge follows the same drilling as the fixed members of the family.

Fitting And Adjusting This Hinge

Bore the door to the drawing depth first, and check the base of the cup. Depth is what decides where the door face ends up relative to the cabinet, and a cup cut shallow leaves the hinge arm under permanent preload that no amount of screw tightening will remove.

Fix the plate to the cabinet side on the marking line, starting the screws only finger tight so the plate can still be nudged. Hang the door by seating the front of the arm on the plate and pressing the rear until the clip takes. Check the reveal along the whole length of the door, and only then tighten the plate screws properly.

All later correction happens at those plate screws. Side to side travel comes from the slots, front to back from where the plate was fixed, and door height from the hinge position in the cup. Nothing on this hinge is corrected by bending an arm, and nothing should be corrected by packing behind the plate: packing compresses, the door returns to its fault, and the hinge is left carrying a load it was never meant to react alone.

On a tall door, check the swing with the door half open as well as closed. Two hinges can hold an even gap on a shut door and still let a long panel twist when it is swung, and that is a hinge count question rather than an alignment question.

Where Buyers Specify The F806H

Kitchen and bathroom contract work is the first market for this hinge. Doors travel separately from cabinets on a site lift, are hung at the end of the job, and are expected to come off again years later when a worktop, cistern or appliance has to be changed. A clip on hinge is written into those specifications for exactly that reason, and the long spine plate is added when the doors are tall or the board is soft.

Wardrobe and fitted closet joinery is the second market. A full height bedroom door is heavy, awkward in a narrow room, and is removed more often than a kitchen door during the life of the furniture. That combination is what this hinge is built for: heavy panel, long screw spread, repeated door removal.

Retail fit out, hotel joinery, office storage, locker furniture, reception desks and display cabinets form the third group, where the cabinet is fixed to the building but the doors must come off for restocking, servicing or refurbishment without a maintenance visit turning into a carpentry job.

Where a door is never removed and unit price leads, the fixed member of this family is the cheaper and simpler answer. Where the environment is wet or salty, neither hinge is right and a corrosion resistant hinge should be quoted instead.

Common Faults And What Inspection Shows

Reported symptomWhat inspection normally shows
Door came off by itselfArm was rested on the plate front and never pressed fully into the clip
Door springs back when shutCup bored too shallow, so the hinge arm sits proud and is under preload
Gap runs uneven along the doorThe two hinges are not on one line, or the plate was fixed off the marking line
Hinge pulls out of the cabinet sideWorn screw holes after repeated refits, or a short spine plate carrying a door that needed a long one
Soft close feels weak or has stoppedDamper pierced or lubricated on site; a sealed hinge unit is replaced, not repaired
Clip feels loose after a yearPlate movement in the board rather than wear at the tail; check the fixing before the hinge

Ordering, OEM And Quality Control

Send the door height, panel material, panel thickness and door count, and we confirm the hinges per door, the screw type and the carton total for this hinge. Mixed shipments are routine on this family: the detachable long spine hinge on tall wardrobe doors, the fixed long spine hinge on base units, and the short spine version where the cabinet side is crowded with shelf pins and runner screws. All of them run from one door boring template, so a mixed order costs a customer nothing in machine setup.

OEM marking and retail packing options for hydraulic hinges

Brand marking can be stamped on the hinge arm, finish can be matched to your own standard, and packing can be bulk cartons, boxed pairs for a hardware shelf, or carded sets for retail. Damper viscosity is the first parameter changed when a buyer wants a firmer or gentler close, and it is set during assembly rather than adjusted in the field.

Batches are released on swing feel, damper engagement point, seating force at the clip, finish appearance and plate squareness, with sample sets cycled on a bench rig drawn from finished cartons. A pre shipment inspection report is issued against the sample you approved, so the hinge that arrives matches the hinge that was signed off.

Choosing Between The Family Members

Buyers of this hinge normally compare three or four models, because a cabinet package rarely needs one hinge on every door. These hinges share the cup boring, so a shipment can mix them without a second setup, and the only decisions left are the plate joint, the spine length and the tail.

  • This hinge — clip on, alloy tail, long spine plate, hydraulic: a heavy door that has to come off by hand.
  • Fixed long spine version — same load spread without the release joint, for doors that stay on and where price leads.
  • Detachable short spine version — same release action on a compact plate, for crowded cabinet sides and lighter panels.
  • Open tail fixed hinge — the fixed variant with an open rear end, where the fitting detail calls for it.
  • Hinge without a damper — free swing for stores, service cupboards and budget specifications.

Read the choice as three questions. Does the door ever have to come off? That fixes the plate joint. How heavy is the panel and what board is it hung on? That fixes the spine. Does the door have to close quietly? That fixes whether the hinge carries a damper. Answer those and the model code selects itself.

Hinge Count Per Door

Quantity is the question our sales team answers most often, and it is decided by the door rather than by habit. A hinge carries shear at the plate screws and bending at the edge of the cup bore, and both loads rise with door height and panel weight long before the hinge itself yields.

Two hinges per door suit a standard wall unit door. Three hinges spread the same weight over a longer run of cabinet side, which is what a tall wardrobe or pantry door needs, and three is also the answer where a soft board panel relies on screw spread rather than on screw strength. A fourth hinge does not make a light door close better, and on a damped hinge it works against the mechanism by adding a second closing resistance to the same swing.

Because this hinge pairs a long spine plate with a damper, it usually appears on the heaviest doors in a package. Confirm your door height, material and thickness with us and we will state the hinge count for the panel rather than leave it to whoever is on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does alloy tail mean on this hinge? The tail member of the hinge is an alloy part made to a mould instead of a formed steel one, which keeps the faces that the clip engages dimensionally consistent. Other components of the hinge remain steel.

Is this the same as the fixed long spine hinge? The plate is the same long spine plate, but this hinge releases by hand at the arm, so the door can be lifted off without undoing screws.

Can the clip be converted to fixed on site? No. The arm and plate are different parts between the two versions, so the version has to be chosen when the hinge is ordered.

Can the soft close be disabled? No, the damper sits inside the hinge arm and works on the closing arc whenever the hinge is fitted correctly. Where free swing is required, order the hinge without a damper.

Is it suitable for a wet room? No, this is an interior furniture hinge. For wet rooms, coastal installations or wash down duty, specify a corrosion resistant hinge instead.
